SOLIDWORKS Vs. Solid Edge
14 October 2025
Are you considering SOLIDWORKS Vs. Solid Edge? If you’re already using Solid Edge you’re probably frustrated by the recent licencing changes and the lack of flexibility from your vendor. Many companies are rightfully beginning to question their position and are making the switch to SOLIDWORKS.
What We’re Hearing from Solid Edge Users
We’ve seen a marked increase from veteran Solid Edge users. Much of the time we hear very similar complaints relating to licencing and unfair pricing. These are genuine quotes from recent Visiativ discovery calls:
“We purchased Solid Edge as an on-premise product. Now we’re being forced to a multi-year subscription model which will increase our annual subscription dramatically!”
and…
“As Solid Edge is provided via a single source, how can we control our costs going forward if there’s no competition?”
Does that sound familiar? You’re not alone.
There’s a Better Alternative
Visiativ UK & Ireland has a specialist team experienced in helping organisations move from Solid Edge – essentially one CAD platform – to a complete, future-ready technology suite, SOLIDWORKS.
We understand both the practical and strategic reasons behind a change and have a proven process for making the transition seamless.
Why are Companies Switching from Solid Edge to SOLIDWORKS?
Hundreds of businesses have already transitioned from Solid Edge to an integrated SOLIDWORKS environment with us. They’ve all seen improvements in flexibility, capability and long-term stability thanks to the tools and services we offer.
Key reasons cited for change:
-
Significant Technology Upgrade discounts (limited time – contact us now)
-
Flexible licensing models (Perpetual or SaaS)
-
Engineering Automation & CPQ
-
Access to a wide industry talent pool
-
On-premise, cloud and hybrid deployment options
-
Unique ERP and integration tools
A common frustration we hear on discovery calls is the challenge of recruitment. On a recent call, a design manager told us: “We struggle to find trained Solid Edge resource. So we’re having to re-train new hires as they are unable to hit the ground running”. He was pleased to hear that this isn’t an issue with SOLIDWORKS. It’s taught in university and is the most used CAD software in the world today, so there’s a far larger pool of experienced users and upcoming talent available.
And if you’re worried about legacy data – don’t be. We can re-use your existing CAD models and drawings and even manage them within our fully integrated PDM and PLM environments.
This combination of products and services enables improved performance across the entire product lifecycle.
Don’t just take our word for it!
We’ve transitioned hundreds of customers from Solid Edge to SOLIDWORKS and they’ve all seen tangible results. Here are three companies who’ve successfully made the change and are now benefiting from enhanced capability, flexibility and long-term support from Visiativ.
Ricoh UK Products Ltd
We’ve partnered with Ricoh UK Products Ltd for more than fifteen years. They’re well known for producing printers and photocopiers, they also manufacture the consumables for these machines.
Originally using Solid Edge, the Ricoh team worked with Visiativ to investigate a better, more efficient way of working. Now their products are made using automated machinery developed in SOLIDWORKS. Ricoh also make use of SOLIDWORKS in their on-site additive manufacturing facility, where 3D printing supports rapid prototyping.
Ricoh use SOLIDWORKS 3D CAD along with SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional for data management, SOLIDWORKS Simulation for FEA and plastics, SOLIDWORKS Electrical and SOLIDWORKS Visualize for rendering.
Watch the video to find out how SOLIDWORKS has has helped Ricoh cut design time and boost efficiency by allowing them to reuse existing data.
Terumo Aortic
“Terumo Aortic made the decision to move from SolidEdge to SOLIDWORKS in 2012, mainly to improve our CAD data management but also to take advantage of the built in tools like SOLIDWORKS Simulation and Visualize.
The user interface in SOLIDWORKS PDM is so user-friendly and it also manages our SolidEdge and Autocad files seamlessly with built in add-ins.
The support from the Visiativ team was also a factor in our transition. They’re superb and are very knowledgeable about SOLIDWORKS, PDM and SolidEdge, the latter being particularly helpful during the transition.”
Roy Hunter, Lead CAD Engineer, Terumo Aortic

Clansman Dynamics
“We transitioned from Solid Edge to SOLIDWORKS 3D CAD & SOLIDWORKS PDM with Visiativ. The professionalism and flexibility shown by both the company and its staff made the move feel less daunting. They tailored the process to our specific needs, adjusting training and providing responsive, hands-on support at every stage.
Visiativ’s adaptable approach and expertise gave us confidence throughout and ensured we could quickly benefit from SOLIDWORKS’ capabilities.
Clansman Dynamics won’t go back and I would highly recommend them to any organisation seeking a flexible and supportive software partner.”
Chris McCrory, Engineering Manager, Clansman Dynamics
