Collaboration is Key to Solve Manufacturing Challenges

30 August 2024

At Visiativ, our guiding principle, “Sharing is Growing,” reflects our belief in the power of collaboration. By sharing expertise, we ignite innovation, which in turn fosters effective solutions and drives growth.

In this spirit of collaboration, we want to introduce Haven Products, a company we recently met at a Scottish Engineering networking event. We believe their service offering could be of significant value to UK manufacturers. Given the current challenges faced by the industry, collaboration with Haven Products could provide innovative solutions that address some of these pressing issues.

Why?

The latest Make UK Q2 Manufacturing Outlook highlighted a growing concern: while orders have surged, manufacturing output has struggled to keep pace. A significant factor contributing to this disparity is the ongoing labour shortage, both skilled and unskilled, which hampers the ability of manufacturers to meet rising demand. To bridge this gap, businesses need flexible, short-term solutions that address these challenges without requiring long-term commitments.

Enter Haven Products

As well as providing valuable job opportunities for those with disabilities in the local area, Haven’s services provide an additional resource to local businesses addressing bottlenecks in their own manufacturing process, by supplementing shortages in labour or skills gaps, and even freeing up space for core processes, enabling manufacturers to maximise efficiency and output.

How?

Established in the aftermath of World War II to provide work opportunities for injured veterans, Haven Products has a rich history of nearly 75 years of supporting people with disabilities. Their current operations span three key areas:

1. Textiles Manufacture and supply: supplying competitively priced personal protective equipment, workwear, uniforms, and marine safety clothing for industrial use, with significant supply to the NHS.

2. Contract Packaging: Providing packing and labelling services, as well as inspection and rework, for high-profile distilleries and other sectors, leveraging their HMRC-approved bonded warehouse for projects involving alcohol and tobacco.

3. Document Services: Offering comprehensive document scanning, digital cataloguing, and secure storage for both commercial and public sector clients.

Looking ahead, Haven is exploring the launch of a WEEE (waste from electrical and electronic equipment) recycling service, potentially launching in the first half of 2025.

In Conclusion

Manufacturers worried about missing out on the much-anticipated growth in sales orders due to constraints in scaling up their output should consider exploring outsourcing options for non-core activities, like those provided by Haven Products. Even better, by using a value-add mapping programme, they can identify specific areas within their processes that would benefit most from outsourcing, allowing them to focus resources on their core operations.
