The Challenge

When drilling for oil, especially in deeper and more complex environments, pressure is maintained using water. As a result, once the oil reaches the surface and enters storage, a small percentage of water, often around one or two per cent, remains in the mix.

That small percentage, however, can equate to a significant financial loss.

As tankers offload their cargo, the water naturally settles at the bottom while the oil floats to the top. Traditional detection methods like ultrasonic volume measurement can show how much liquid is moving. However, it doesn’t show what’s actually in the pipeline. For buyers, this poses a serious issue. How much of what they are paying for is oil, and how much is water?

The Solution from Sampling Blending Solutions

That’s where Sampling Blending Solutions comes in – they design equipment that mixes the oil and water content, thoroughly breaking up and redistributing the water. From there, they collect a sample and send it to a lab for fiscal analysis. This process ensures a much more accurate reading of how much water is present throughout the entire pipeline, not just what has settled at the bottom.
